TOM GRENNAN
(born 8 June 1995) is 27 and from bedford england
peaked at number five on the uk albums chart and includes the single "Found What I've Been Looking For".
Grennan comes from an Irish family. He attended st thomas more upper song in Bedford. At the age of 18, he was attacked on the street and was left with four metal plates and screws in his jaw that "still hurt when winter comes". He trained to become a professional footballer, playing for luton town for a while, also trying for northamtom townand Aston Villa; he was later released. Grennan is a supporter of Manchester United.[4] He also worked briefly at Costa Coffee. this image has two young people on it with various colours in the background. they are smiling and are happy. this goes well with the up beat colours in the background. this could mean that its a happy show and it would attract the viewers to watch it. this also could represent a gate way into there world and storys about them. the various shapes and colours could mean that every thing and everyone is aloud there no matter who they are.
this is for the young which can be seen by the future sounds and the young presenters. this is seen with the media language and colours. the colours are brighter and and the neon pinks. the logos are very basic and big. the content is helpful and informative in the world around them. the presenters are young as well as the artists and the songs are brand new. so i would say the target age is 15-29.
this has lots off bright colours and has a young person with famous actor. they are in shield like shapes which could mean that they are important and also makes them stand out. the colour pallet is very bright and colourful which could mean that its fun and enjoyable. the 1 in the corner is there to inform people of were to find it so then they can watch it. also the bc logo on it means that it is a safe reliable show so that any one can watch it, and it shows that it informs and entertains.
this is seen by the use of young artists who are not main stream and they are british and they are trying to help them succeed.
this was about how the old don't want there to be a bbc one because its for the young and didn't want them to have much money and how the main steam music is pointless

MEDIA CONVERGING
media converging is a term that can refer to the merging of previously distinct media technology and media forms due to digitisation and computer networking.
the advantages are that its accessible form other forms of media instead of just radio. the bbc would get more views on there programs informing and entertaining. the advantage for vevo is that they get more views increasing the amount of money they vevo get. it also helps views because they can access it fro many places instead of just one.

Live lounge appeal and format
L/O:to explore the format of the show and its appeals
the benefits of putting the same program on two different radio stations are to increase the audience size.
these presenters are used because they are young and are funny and are from different backgrounds. these means they are diverse there careers are similar same with there awards as well.
the live lounge is a room in the BBC radio 1 studios. it is done live and all done on acoustic so live and no auto tune. they have no backing track to help so its done live. they do have little rehearsals before hand to help the artists.

convergents
1) you can access all the bbc programs from bbc bitesize and the news so you can access any hing by the bbc
2)lots of new artists that are trendy
3) previous episodes and other artist news and info about the presenters.
live performance is regarded as more culturally significant than simply playing records. it is also more expensive.
stormzy
3 days preparation. 6 professional singers , musical director. and more these all get payed loads and they need lots of space to do it. this takes lots of money unlike a not live show.
The live lounge appeal to the target audience and meats ht remit because of its use of young presenters. they use them because they use young slang and are up to date with culture. this meats with the remit because it educates whilst still being entitling and being for 15 to 20 year olds. it does this by using new songs and new artist from England. which is good for the bbc which is an english station. this also meats the remit. the use of slang is good to attract the audience like "bro" which is very young for them. for example the use of "bro" and and other slang appeal to the young audience. also the songs like ed Sharon may make a younger audience watch it. also new songs from english artists can make them get younger views.

exam:
question 1:
1:horizontal integration
2: convergence.
3:remit.
question 2:
1: they target there audiences by using slang language. they use this because it is popular in young people which is there target audience. this also makes it recognisable to them. this makes them instructed because its the language they use daily. this is seen in radio 1 live lounge when the presenter is talking to a young artist who uses slang such as "bro". this is used by younger people who are there target audience.
2: the BBC can benefits the public by entertaining them which means they will come back to be entertained and informed. these music radio stations can meet the requirements by entertaining the audience. also it informs the audience about events about music and new artists. radio 1 live lounge does this by using new artists who entertain the viewer by using young language and talking about there experiences.
3: one way a radio audience can be active is by joining prize pools and phone ins. radios can be active by using phone ins and asking them questions and letting them answer them. this incureges them to do this making them entertained and want to come back. one way that they can be passive is by just listening to the music being played or what they are doing. so they dont have to interact.
question 3:
BBC radios have to provide a wider range of content then commercial radio because they have to meet there remit so that they stay open. they do this by having live performances like live lounge. but they also have other music on as well. but they dont just have music they also have live news near you to tell you if theres been a crash on a main road or something else. they also have informative things to help people through ruff times or to help students.
they do this by using convergents. this is were they can use diffrent devises like a phone to access the content given . this is like the use of phones and other devises. this can make more people watch it. one of the shows on bbc 1 is live lounge which informs and entertains the audience by using live music and supports new artists. this makes them meat there remit.

whats content is more than remit explain from study
commercial ?
they dont have to attract Target 15-29 year olds to fit remit and
a wide audience on r1.
BBc radio provides a wider range of content than commercial radio for severral reasons.firstly radio 1 provides a target audience to 15-29 year olds. this example is due to the remit and in piticular the students who need help. we can identify this in the live lounge through the young artists experiences at schools and how they dealt with it through music.

whos in the video:
- Francis Lawrence.

lyrics:
He was a boy
She was a girl
Can I make it any more obvious?
He was a punk
She did ballet
What more can I say?
He wanted her
She'd never tell
Secretly she wanted him as well
But all of her friends
Stuck up their nose
They had a problem with his baggy clothes
He was a skater boy
She said, "See you later, boy"
He wasn't good enough for her
She had a pretty face
But her head was up in space
She needed to come back down to earth
Five years from now
She sits at home
Feeding the baby, she's all alone
She turns on TV
Guess who she sees
Skater boy rockin' up MTV
She calls up her friends
They already know
And they've all got tickets to see his show
She tags along
And stands in the crowd
Looks up at the man that she turned down
He was a skater boy
She said, "See you later, boy"
He wasn't good enough for her
Now he's a super star
Slammin' on his guitar
Does your pretty face see what he's worth?
He was a skater boy
She said, "See you later, boy"
He wasn't good enough for her
Now he's a super star
Slammin' on his guitar
Does your pretty face see what he's worth?
Sorry, girl, but you missed out
Well, tough, luck that boy's mine now
We are more than just good friends
This is how the story ends
Too bad that you couldn't see
See the man that boy could be
There is more that meets the eye
I see the soul that is inside
He's just a boy
And I'm just a girl
Can I make it any more obvious?
We are in love
Haven't you heard
How we rock each other's world
I'm with the skater boy
I said, "See you later, boy"
I'll be back stage after the show
I'll be at a studio
Singing the song we wrote
About a girl you used to know
I'm with the skater boy
I said, "See you later, boy"
I'll be back stage after the show
I'll be at a studio
Singing the song we wrote
About a girl you used to know

Teenage Dirtbag
2000
Genre:alternative\indie, pop rock. skater rock
date song release in uk:june 20 2002
what the songs about:
what happens:
whos in the video:
- Jeff Gordon.
- Jason Biggs. Brendan B. Brown. Peter McCarrick Brown.
lyrics:
Her name is Noelle
I have a dream about her
She rings my bell
I got gym class in half an hour
Oh, how she rocks
In Keds and tube socks
But she doesn't know who I am
And she doesn't give a damn about me
'Cause I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby
Yeah, I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby
Listen to Iron Maiden, baby, with me, ooh
Her boyfriend's a dick
And he brings a gun to school
And he'd simply kick
My ass if he knew the truth
He lives on my block
And he drives an IROC
But he doesn't know who I am
And he doesn't give a damn about me
'Cause I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby
Yeah, I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby
Listen to Iron Maiden, baby, with me, ooh
Oh, yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missin'
Oh, yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missin'
Man, I feel like mold
It's prom night and I am lonely
Lo and behold
She's walkin' over to me
This must be fake
My lip starts to shake
How does she know who I am?
And why does she give a damn about me?
I've got two tickets to Iron Maiden, baby
Come with me Friday, don't say maybe
I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby, like you
Oh, yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missin'
Oh, yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missin'...

Sk8ter Boi
the song is actually a story. it is a about a skater boy punk who liked a pretty girl who did ballet so she was ver y diffrent from him though she liked him too. But since her friends didn't like him she turned him down, five years later she is a single mother. and hes a rock star. it helps promote the music and her identity and her image in the music video by what she wering. also by her smashing her guitar on a car it shows shes a rocker. this promotes her. it some what conveys the music.
teenage dirt bag
The purpose of making teenage dirtbag is that the dirtbags are not that bad and are better than the sporty people and how hes not that bad. even tho hes a loser to every one. then his crush comes up to him and speaks to him. thats when he wakes up from the dream and so he purpose is to say that the looses are not that bad. it promotes the band. it was there daybue single so it introduses the band to us. so tehre identity and status.
the narrative of teenage dirt bag
the narrative is that he is a looser at his school and has a crush on a girl even though he dosent think she knows who he is. and gets bullied by her popular boyfriend. then it came to the prom and she came over to him and asked him to go watch iron maden then he wakes up and realises its all a dream.
the narrative of sk8ter boi
The narrative of sk8ter boi is that they form an ilegal gig in the middle of the street and there are hints to a deeper one were its a skater boy was there filming were as the girl was being trampled on and arrested unlike the skater boy filming at the front.

mise_en_scene WEDNESDAY 8TH FEBRUARY23
L/O:to examine the use of media language in music videos
this promotes her image of being wealthy through the amount of jewellery and gold on her costume. this makes her look rich. also she's in a bath of money and jewellery. also the gold taps also promotes her wealth.her hair and makeup also makes her rich. this makes her look successful
SK8TER BOI:
the costume is a typical punk skater outfit. with the cap on backwards and the tattoos. connotes that she a rebel. the lighting is on her face making her look brighter. it also looks like its in a abandoned building which is like a rebel hideout linkning to the outfit.
the prop of the prop of the camera is used so then theres another camera. also he looks like a typical punk with a lip piercing. and small hooped earrings. the hat as well. the lights shining to wards the camera
the setting is a street in a city with loads of people dancing to the ilegal gig in the centre of the street. they are on top of the cars. the street looks typical for a city street. the performance is located directly in the middle of the street making it the centre of your focus.
TEENAGE DIRT BAG:
this is were the performance takes place they are all in a circle. but the costumes make them look like they dont care like a typical teenager. the setting is a sports hall with all there interments. there hair is scruffy making them look like they dont care.
his facial expresions are shock and some anger becuse they ran over his bike. his cloths are not fashionable. like his hat. and coat. this links to his status of being a looser.
she has lots of makeup on and lots of hair products. this is like her bright red dress making her the centre of attention.

Wednesday 1st march 23
do now
1. setting : its set in a remote island with a little town on it. its a fishing town with lots of fishermen to show that it is a fishing town. they did this because its set in 1970s.
2. costume : hes wearing a
3. lighting was dark so low-key lighting which is unlike a pop video.
L/O: to examine the use of media language in music videos.
avril Lavigne and her friends are dressed like skaters. they have achieved this by using their costumes, makeup and their hair. this could suggest to the audience that the genre is skater rock and that they are rebels.
in avril lavignes music video it is set in a city street. we know this as we are shown shots of the street full of cars and tall buildings. in my opinion the video is set here because it has lots of people and it is a genre convention for pop music videos. also it would be weird to have an ilegal gig in a small town.
the main character in teenage dirtbag wears a trapper hat which is a stereotypical geek also teh winter coat shows that he dosent were trendy clothes. the connitations are that hes a looser. the reson why they put him in there is to go with the song.
the music videos for avril Lavignes sk8ter boi and wheatus teenage dirtbag use setting and costume to achieve genre conventions. sk8ter boi archives this by making avril Lavigne and her friends wear typical skater costumes and are put in a city. there costumes are caps being backwards and cuffs on her rists. these make them look like rebels but the use of props with them makes them look truly like skaters. also the setting in a city is used to show how they are rebeling to a large audience which archives there skater rock conventions because they re causing chaos like the average rock video. similarly in teenage dirtbag they stick to the genre conventions by using the school and costumes of characters. they do this because the song is about a looser so they have an actor dressed in typical geek cloths to contrast on the girls popular boy friend. also the setting of the school makes it for the younger audience by having it there.
CAMERAWORK
Shot type
Angel
Movement
focus-pull is were the camera dosent move but the focus changes
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday 8th march 23
L/O: to explore how camerawork is used to create meaning in music videos
1. the camera shot is a long shot wit ha dutch angel.
2. its used to make it more fun so that the atmosphere is fun feel and bright. this suggest they could be singing about fun things or friendship.
3. the mice-en-scene in this makes them look fun bur also shows who the main star is by putting them in the middle this is done also with how she's the only one wearing red and how she's on a different prop.. also the costumes make them look fun

1. she's in a bleak and baron place with nothing around her which connotes loneliness and nothingness
2. the connotations could link to what she's singing about which could be loneliness because there is nothing there
3.this links to the camera shot which is a wide shot because it shows how there is nothing there and theres know one.
sk8ter boi is expressionistic
teenage dirtbag is naturalistic
2. shot type: pov
its used to show the prospective of a viewer who is close to her which shows that shes the star.
its used here to show that she is the star in the middle. this is use d to show how he has departed from the blonde girl at the start to avril lavugne
3. shot type: long shot
its used to show how hes alone completely isolated
its used here to show the sign and him and how hes a looser.
4. shot type: long shot high angle
it used to show how she is the star and centre of attention.
its used here when every ones looking at her.
5. shot type:mid shot with a low angle
its used to show how they look bigger and stronger
its used to show how they are the stereotypical popular person.
6.shot type:extreme close up with a dutch angle
its used to show how she's the centre of attention making her a star also its used to make the video more fun
its used hear to show her importance.
the reason why there is lots of diffrent camera angles and shots is to make it seem fast pace which is expressionistic. they want this because its diffrent from usual videos
skater boi
1.chaotic
2.fast
3.thrilling
4.energetic
teenage dirtbag
1.smooth
2.chilled
3.calm
4.natrual
the camera movement in skater boi is expressionistic. for example at one point in the video theres a POV shot. The chaotic camera work fits the tone of the song because its a chaotic song and energetic which is shone by the camera work.
the camera moment in teenage dirtbag is naturalistic. For example at one point in the video
in sk8ter boi the producers use camera work to help construct the identity of the artist by using fast pace camera shots. they do this because it shows the chaotic nature of avril Lavigne. for example at one point in the video it shows a high angle of her on a car. they do this because she the centre of attention and has every one around her. this makes her the star of the video because every one is looking at her. another example is a POV shot of someones camera wit her on the camera.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
L/O Wednesday 22nd march 23
to explore how sound and editing are used to create meaning in music videos
all sound is ether diegetic or non diegetic
diegetic sounds are those inside the world of the film that the characters can hear
non diegetic sounds are sounds outside the film that characters can not hear
teenage dirtbag :
only diegetic sound is the car hitting the bike and the bike falling over. to connect narrative to song
sk8ter boi:
.cans
.rope
.unclipping
.traffic
.police sirens
.helicopter
.smashing glass
at the start the diegetic sounds are supposed to set the scene. very anti-establishment
EDITING
editing includes special effect, transitions, pace, order of shots, continuity, shot duration and rhythm
both videos use linear continues editing (continuity)
linear (continuity):
events are edited/ presented in chronological order
non-linear:
out of order editing.
ska8ter boi:faster beet faster cuts.
music videos use media language to differ from each other through camera work to show the artists character . in sk8ter boi they use expressionistic camera work to show the chaos. they do this so that they can make a more exiting feel which goes with the music. the effect of that makes it a fun video to watch. this contrasts with teenage dirtbag which is naturalistic. teenage dirtbag shows a story which is more calming than sk8ter boi because the songs like that.

sk8ter boi
.avril Lavigne was represented as a rebellious person in the music video she was also meant to be a rule breaker.
.the punk rock genre was represented as a cool genre with how they acted in the music video
.teenagers were represented as naughty and violent which shows the rebelliousness of teenagers also they are antiestablishment
teenage dirtbag
.the band is represented as energetic and fun as seen when they hold fruit and dance around.
.the male protagonist is a classic nerdy looser you can tell he dose not fit in unlike the main female character who is popular
. the ethnicity is predominately white
.the sexuality is heteronormative
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WEDNESDAY 26th APRIL 23
L/O:To explore and practice exam style questions
4 mark question:
Compare how gender representations are constructed in music videos. Refer to two music videos you have studied to support your answer.
Gender has been represented in the Avril Lavignes sk8ter boi gender is represented as anti stereotypical. This is seen with the mice-en-scene through Avrils costume. Her costume is very baggy. This is unlike most music videos were the women is objectified. This suggests that Avril is very strong and inderpendent and can fit in with the males around her. Differently in Wheatus teenage dirtbag the main female character is represented as stereotypical. This can be seen through the editing. The editing does slow motion when she comes into view this is seen at the very start when she comes into the video. This makes her seem like the prize. This is very stereotypical for the female gender in the time it came out.
10 mark question:
Explain how stereotypes are used in music videos. refer to two music videos you have studied to support your answer.
Stereotypes are used in music videos because they are easily recognisable and so help the audience understand the narrative. For example in Sk8ter Boi, they use stereotypical representation of males as active, rule breakers and interested in girls. This is shown through them often skating ,biking or driving, often in places they shouldn't be (like on the roof-tops) and filming the pretty girl in the car. This fits in with the teenage stereotypes. The teenage stereotype is represented as rebellious in Sk8ter Boi this is done by showing teens spray panting walls and going in ilegal places. this is seen in the start of the video when a teen was absalling down a building after spray painting a wall. Similarly Teenage Dirtbag uses stereotypes. For example a stereotype used is a stereotypical jock. This jock is big build and good looking hes also very popular. This is seen when he is walking down the corridor with all his friend and how every one moves out of his way. Another stereotype is the main character who is seen as a looser. For example his costume is very diffrent compared to every one else with his funny hat and winter coat. This is seen in almost every scene.
16/1- Some good points but you need to be aware of the remit for R1 and also 1. You need to ensure that you give specific examples from the Live Lounge you listened that show how that particular show appealed to the audience. E.g songs played, conversation or words used.
ReplyDelete6/2- T: Q3: Make points about how the BBC Radio provide wider content on their radio stations, give examples on Radio 1 and why they have to do this linked to the remit.
ReplyDelete
